‘Sums up perfectly the age in which we are currently living’: MAN OF LA MANCHA – West End ★★★

In London theatre, Musicals, Opinion, Reviews by Kate Gould31st May 2019Leave a Comment

Man of La Mancha is a curious beast. Often dubbed as one of the classic “lost” musicals, it was last seen in the West End in the 1960s but is currently being revived at the London Coliseum.

‘The Frasier/Only Fools & Horses mash-up you didn’t know you wanted’: MAN OF LA MANCHA – West End

In London theatre, Musicals, Opinion, Reviews by Shanine Salmon30th May 2019Leave a Comment

The novelty of the casting and brightness of the music in Man of La Mancha make a big impression, though be warned that the show is not without its darker elements, some intended and others not.

‘It’s rather a case of a good cast in search of a better show’: MAN OF LA MANCHA – West End ★★★

In London theatre, Musicals, Opinion, Reviews by Caroline Hanks-Farmer24th May 2019Leave a Comment

Despite the best efforts of Kelsey Grammer in the lead role, this leaden and often down right confusing revival of Man of La Mancha at the London Coliseum is unlikely to give the show new impetus on this side of the pond.

‘Insufficiently developed’: MAN OF LA MANCHA – West End

In London theatre, Musicals, Opinion, Reviews by Olivia Mitchell8th May 2019Leave a Comment

Man of La Mancha is considered a ‘rare’ revival and from this production it’s pretty clear why. The story is highly dated and it’s evidently a very hard piece to stage.

It has been 50 years since Man Of La Mancha last played in London’s West End and based upon this year’s offering from the ENO and co-producers Grade-Linnitt it is easy to see why.

‘The desire to mount this epic production is misguided’: MAN OF LA MANCHA – West End

In London theatre, Musicals, Opinion, Reviews, Sticky by Johnny Fox1st May 2019Leave a Comment

One wonders which came first for the Grade/Linnit company – the misguided desire to mount an epic scale production of Man of La Mancha, a musical which hasn’t been.produced in London since 1968 for very good reasons, or the need to find a project for Kelsey Grammer?

BIG FISH THE MUSICAL – The Other Palace ★★★

In London theatre, Musicals, Opinion, Reviews by Caroline Hanks-Farmer13th November 2017Leave a Comment

Kelsey Grammer brings gravitas and empathy to this largely bed-bound role. His decent singing voice does its best to wrest emotion from Edward’s gruff Southern accent but on boisterous songs like Red, White And True, it veers between baritone and barking seal.

Album Review: Finding Neverland (2015 Original Broadway Cast Recording)

In Albums, Broadway, London theatre, Musicals, Opinion, Reviews by Ian Foster17th August 2017Leave a Comment

I saw, and rather liked, the musical of Finding Neverland when it premiered in Leicester back in 2012 but given the extreme redevelopment it underwent thanks to Harvey Weinstein’s involvement, the show that opened on Broadway in 2015 was substantially different.
