Rock of Ages is a jukebox music which lacks any storyline but makes up for it through the use of humour and performance.
Let’s start by saying that Rock of Ages is not a musical masterpiece by any means, but it is a super self-aware, high intensity, fun and crazily well performed show, that’ll definitely have your toes tapping to some of the most well-loved rock classics.
Chris D’Arienzo’s 2005 jukebox musical Rock of Ages has a lot going for it: a soundtrack of epic 80s rock classics, a feel-good LA love story, and perhaps most importantly, an absolute refusal to take itself seriously at any point.
Fat Friends The Musical might not be the kind of show you see over and over again, but if you’re looking for a fun, feel-good night out then you can’t go too far wrong with what is an enjoyable production.
Fat Friends the Musical has got quick wit and northern humour, a cast who is as passionate about the production as the audience appears to be, and it’s got Kay’s Mellor’s life-affirming stamp on it, too. Uplifting, joyous and surely on target for a West End transfer.
Two of the stars of Fat Friends the Musical, X Factor winner Sam Bailey and Coronation Street legend Kevin Kennedy, put down the doughnuts in-between shows to talk about the musical, which is heavy on fun and light on calories.

At over two hours, Fat Friends the Musical is a little flabby in the middle and could lose a scene or two, but, overall it’s a heart-warming, lively and entertaining production.
Based on the 1991 film and Roddy Doyle book of the same name, The Commitments is an outstanding must-see musical like no other. For those unfamiliar with the much-loved story, the plot follows a dysfunctional soul band from Dublin, Ireland – by the name of The Commitments – and their journey to become “the world’s hardest working band”.
Written in 1986 by Roddy Doyle, The Commitments tells the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working class music fan, who shapes an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians into an amazing live act, the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced.
Kevin Kennedy is currently on tour with the stage show The Commitments. I had the opportunity to catch up with Kevin before the tour arrives in Southampton.
