As ever, the wait for the end-of-year lists of favourite plays and performances has to continue until I’ve actually stopped seeing theatre in 2017. But in the meantime, here’s a list of 11 of my top moments in a theatre in 2017.
TRYST – Tabard Theatre ★★★★
The script is beautifully crafted, moving at a pace that flits between thundering forward to reflect the fast passage of time and pulling back to uncover a multitude of truths.
TRYST – Tabard Theatre
Tryst: A private, romantic rendezvous between two lovers, conducted with no one else’s knowledge. Perhaps they wouldn’t approve, perhaps they would recognise the affair for what it is – a predatory act from a man to con a woman out of her worldly possessions.
TRYST – Tabard Theatre ★★★★★
Through both characters’ alternating monologues, the audience is given an insight into the harsh reality of George’s calculating, pathological agenda, juxtaposed against Adelaide’s innocence and optimism, which made me want to shout ‘No!’ in warning at the stage.
TRYST – Tabard Theatre ❤❤❤❤
This gripping drama, starring West End musical star Natasha J Barnes in her fringe play debut, has plenty of twists and turns that keep the audience enthralled from beginning to end.

MACK & MABEL – London Musical Theatre Orchestra
Ostensibly, these are concert presentations of musicals but the joy in what you actually get, the bonuses that get incorporated into the creation of genuine one-off experiences makes LMTO one of the more valuable recent additions to the London theatre ecology.
MACK & MABEL – London Musical Theatre Orchestra ★★★★★
The London Musical Theatre Orchestra (LMTO) have done it again. Another fantastic celebration of a beautiful score performed by a beautiful orchestra and a beautiful cast. It was just a whole lot of beautiful, okay!

FUNNY GIRL – Touring
The toast of the West End has been celebrated in Wolverhampton this evening as Natasha J Barnes (Understudy for Sheridan Smith in the show last year) gave a performance to remember as Fanny Brice. It’s easy to see why audiences took Barnes to their hearts last year and long may she reign, what an incredible find she is.
FUNNY GIRL – Touring
Revisiting Funny Girl, now on tour after its tumultuous (but always impressive) London run that had started at the Menier Chocolate Factory, it’s almost impossible to believe how Michael Mayer had managed to stage it in that tiny space south of the river.
