The latest piece to grace the stage of the Park Theatre is a curious beast, and no mistake. Taking the form of a (fictional) lecture with illustrative acted examples, a healthy dose of audience focused exercises and with a generally high level of comic content, Winner’s Curse never quite makes up its mind what it wants to be or is trying to do.
The inspiration behind… Nichola McAuliffe’s Revenants at EdFringe
Most people also know that in the days leading to the ‘November Revolution’ in Russia, his cousin Tsar Nicholas II and family weren’t allowed to enter Britain and were eventually executed.
‘A must-see for any Dickens fan’: GREAT EXPECTATIONS – Touring ★★★★
To whittle down a 500-plus page book into nearly two and a half hours of theatre is an epic task. Adaptor Ken Bentley manages to do the job succinctly, nothing feeling particularly rushed or crammed in.
‘Elegant take on its theatrical invention’: GREAT EXPECTATIONS – Touring
In its emotional forthrightness and playful theatricality, this touring production of Great Expectations is one to watch out for.
Looking forward: 20 fringe & regional shows to see in 2018 > #theatre2018
There are all sorts of big productions arriving in the months to come (Long Day’s Journey Into Night, the return of Amadeus, PATTI LUPONE!), but I’m using this spot to highlight some of the shows on the London fringe and around the UK (and Amsterdam…) that have piqued my interest and which I hope to get to review.

WAITING FOR GOD – Touring
Waiting For God was a television comedy series that I thoroughly enjoyed watching when it was on our screens, Stephanie Cole and Graham Crowden were a dream team in my humble opinion. I wondered if a stage version would work but I’m delighted to report that it’s a triumph.
Waiting for God: Leading man Jeffrey Holland on not playing an old duffer
I’ve never played someone like Tom before, and that’s what I’m finding most enjoyable. I’ve played older men onstage, of course. But they’re usually doddery old duffers, silly colonels and the like. That’s a very different kettle of fish.

Waiting for God: Leading lady Nichola McAuliffe on never growing old
I think views of older people have changed totally since the TV show was first seen. Thirty years ago, it might have been expected that you’d have an elasticated waist and a pair of slippers on when you were 60, but that’s certainly not the case now.
Waiting for God: From screen to stage with creator Michael Aitkens
The character of Diana has my view of humanity. I had an upbringing that required me to develop a very dark sense of humour from an early age as it was the only way to cope with my family.
Theatre Book Prize winner: Stage Managing Chaos
This is a really exciting book, which tells for the first time the almost unbelievable story of the National Theatre’s production of Fernando Arrabal’s The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria, which was staged at the Old Vic in 1971.
Theatre diary: Guards at the Taj, Junkyard & Waiting for God
In its depiction of two pawns caught up unwillingly in the machinations of the rich and powerful and its philosophical banter, Guards at the Taj reminds me a lot of Tom Stoppard‘s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
