It has been impossible to ignore the reception of Ivo van Hove’s Obsession, the slight sense of glee (from some) at being able to dole out a critical drubbing to the feted director. And so I went into the Barbican with a slight sense of defensiveness.

Ivo van Hove is simply everywhere at present, the wunderkind of international theatre and opera. It’s understandable why he is so much in demand. He has a way of envisioning that is either truly spectacular or passionately intimate, as was the case with his award-winning production of A View from the Bridge for the Young Vic.

London is getting used to Ivo van Hove of Toneelgroep Amsterdam. But his tremendous A View from The Bridge (in a bleak arena) and his striking NT Hedda (in a bleak white room) were written as plays: whereas one of his great tastes as a director is adapting film screenplays.

British actor Jude Law will make a return to the stage in Ivo van Hove’s production of Obsession, set to run at London’s Barbican Theatre from 19 April to 20 May 2017.
