There were a lot of things to enjoy about this new musical. The use of a small cast – most of which were also very talented band members- was impressive, with seamless role changes and transitions from real world to book world.

Paper Hearts is an uplifting rom-com musical set in a high street bookshop. Think ‘You’ve Got Mail’ but this time it has an awesome pop/folk score and it’s half set in Russia. It sounds unusual but stay with me!

Saturday was my first full day at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe – the largest networking, drinking and arts event in the world. I began with my first set of Surgeries – a chance to meet creative producers and artists who have shows here at the festival, which I may never see.
The Lowdown: A musical theatre scratch night
Other forms of theatre have scratch nights, where companies can perform an excerpt from their work in progress, in return for audience feedback. Producer Hannah Elsy observed that there was no such thing for musical theatre, so she organised one at independent arts venue Rich Mix, featuring 20-minute snippets of four musicals currently in development.
