NEWS: Robert Hastie succeeds Daniel Evans as Sheffield artistic director

Sheffield Theatres today announces the appointment of Robert Hastie as the company’s new Artistic Director. Hastie takes up the position in July 2016, taking over from Daniel Evans who steps down as Artistic Director at the end of June to join Chichester Festival Theatre. This appointment sees Hastie return to Sheffield Theatres, where he began his professional theatre career as an actor in Edward Bond’s Lear in 2005.

NEWS: Declan Bennett plays Jesus, Michelle Terry is Henry V at Open Air this summer

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has today announced lead casting for two of its forthcoming summer 2016 productions: Michelle Terry will play the title role of Henry V in director Robert Hastie’s new gender-bending production; and former Once star Declan Bennett will lead the cast in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, directed by Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s Artistic Director Timothy Sheader.

Peter McKintosh designs cold, skilful dictator chic: above a shining marble floor, the majestic Mittel-Europa chandelier dims to a blood-red aurora or to surveillance-camera pinpoints. A wide dark window looms beyond two silver-gilt audience chairs. We are in a Presidential Palace anywhere on the grim modern globe. The Leader himself is never seen; we watch, in fragmented, fugal snap-scenes, four women waiting for him through a long afternoon and evening. Outside, a denied revolution is brewing beyond the river as the despised “Northerners” take revenge.
