‘Entertaining & often ludicrous pandemonium’: PITY – Royal Court Theatre
Walking into the Royal Court to see Rory Mullarkey’s new show Pity, one is welcomed by a full brass band, a working ice-cream stand and a heck of a lot of colour. The energy in the room is buzzing but has a slight edge.
‘Tragedy goes hand-in-hand with farce’: PITY – Royal Court Theatre
Now, on the main stage at the Royal Court Theatre, Rory Mullarkey’s leftfield fantasy, Pity, offers a surreal state-of-the-world account of our society, and of its discombobulations.
‘It’s all so relentless and random’: PITY – Royal Court Theatre
As strong as the cast is (Abraham Popoola and Siobhán McSweeney stand out), the hyperactive knowing style in which they deliver Pity also grates.

‘Assured, fresh & modern interpretation’: THE CHERRY ORCHARD – Manchester
With this production of The Cherry Orchard, the Royal Exchange once again takes an important classic and makes it wonderfully accessible and relevant to the modern age. It is highly recommended.
‘It is one of the best staging’s BOV has produced in the past few years’: THE CHERRY ORCHARD – Bristol ★★★★★
This Cherry Orchard is a production that showcases Michael Boyd, his ensemble, Chekhov and Bristol Old Vic at its very best. I love the theatre when it’s this good.

SAINT GEORGE & THE DRAGON – National Theatre ★★★
The National Theatre’s current production of Saint George and the Dragon is a modern and ambitious twist on the traditional folk tale of Saint George the dragon-slayer. Described as “a folk tale for an uneasy nation” this production time travels from the medieval times all the way to the current day.

SAINT GEORGE & THE DRAGON – National Theatre
After DC Moore’s flawed Common comes Mullarkey’s similarly flawed Saint George and the Dragon. Taking the myth of George, the legendary dragon slayer and rescuer of damsels in distress, the playwright wraps the folktale in the flag of our nation’s story.
