Public booking will open on 25 May 2016 for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End production of School of Rock – The Musical. Previewing at the New London Theatre from 24 October 2016 with opening night on 14 November 2016, School of Rock – The Musical is initially booking to 12 February 2017.
Broadway breaks all previous records for a single week, and I choose the half dozen shows I am most looking forward to this spring in New York.
Big musicals news of the week: Billy Elliot is closing at the Victoria Palace, School of Rock is coming to the London Palladium, Bugsy Malone is returning to the Lyric Hammersmith, and Gypsy will on be BBC4.
There’s currently a flurry of big openings in New York, with the return of The Color Purple to the Great White Way, via London’s own Menier Chocolate Factory, coming this Thursday (December 10) and all set, I’m sure, to turn Cynthia Erivo into a Broadway superstar
Today, 7 December 2015, Andrew Lloyd Webber announces that following its triumphant Broadway opening last night at the Winter Garden Theatre, the West End production of School of Rock – The Musical will open at the London Palladium in Autumn 2016. Dates for the West End run will be confirmed in the New Year with details of when the production will go on sale.
I’m just back from a(nother) crazed addictive week in New York, built around the wedding on Thursday of my friend Vivien Goodwin — former managing director of Samuel French Ltd, and now MD at R&H Theatricals, managing the licensing of their musical theatre catalogue in London and Europe. It coincided with the third anniversary last Tuesday of my own wedding in New York three years earlier. And continuing the wedding theme, I also visited City Hall on Wednesday morning.
Tomorrow (March 22) Stephen Sondheim turns 85 — and Andrew Lloyd Webber turns 67.
It’s one of musical theatre’s great coincidences that the two giants of musical theatre of the second half to the last century share the same birthday.
They’re also both irrepressibly active still.
