A new comedy about outsourcing pregnancy, THERE OR HERE gets its UK premiere tonight (25 January 2018) at London’s Park Theatre. The UK premiere of Jennifer Maisel‘s dramatic comedy THERE OR HERE opens the 2018 season in PARK90 at London’s Park Theatre, where it continues until 17 February. There or Here is mounted by the same producers who scored a hit in 2014 with the UK premiere of another American play, David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face, which was first seen at the Park Theatre before transferring to the National Theatre.
2006… When illness prevents Robyn and Ajay from having a child of their own, they return to India – the country of Ajay’s birth – to outsource their pregnancy to a local woman. As they embark on this journey of a lifetime, their increasing inability to be each other’s comfort drives them to seek solace from other outsourced strangers on the opposite end of their phones.
EastEnders star Rakhee Thakrar features in the THERE OR HERE cast, along with Lucy Fenton (as Robyn), Manish Gandhi, Ursula Mohan and Chris Nayak (Ajay).
THERE OR HEREwas a Finalist at the 2009 PEN West Literary Awards. It was also a Finalist at the Sundance Theatre Lab (2007) and the O’Neill Theatre Conference (2008). The play was premiered by Hypothetical Theatre during their residency at the 14th Street Theater in New York on 9 September 2008.
The UK production is directed by Vik Sivalingam and designed by Vicky Sweatman, with lighting by Robbie Butler and sound by Nicola Chang. It’s presented by Special Relationship Productions in association with Anita Creed Productions and Park Theatre.
