A new physical theatre adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, which has been touring England and Northern Ireland this autumn, arrives in London for two weeks later this month, playing in both the north and the south of the capital. Book your tickets now.
Theatrical Niche’s production, which is adapted from Chekhov’s famous play by Venetia Twigg, runs at New Wimbledon Studio from 19 to 23 November 2019 and at Islington’s Old Red Lion Theatre from 2 to 7 December.
The weary inhabitants of an isolated country household plunge head over heels in lust when a beautiful stranger arrives. As the head of the household announces the estate sale for his own gain, the strains of repression begin to bubble, until Vanya hits boiling point.
This updated take on Chekhov’s stunningly prescient Uncle Vanya highlights the farcical nature of the text whilst showcasing captivating physical work inspired by the decline of the bee. In creating and touring the adaptation, the company has worked with leading charity, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, which works to increase understanding of bumblebee ecology and conservation, increase the quality and quantity of bumblebee habitat and inspire people to take action against the bumblebee’s decline.
In addition to adapting the play, Twigg, a regular in both Theatrical Niche and Moon on a Stick productions, also plays Yelena. Matthew Houlihan, who plays the title role, boasts credits including Major Barbara (Orange Tree Theatre), The Taming of the Shrew and Tricks of Youth (both Read Not Dead). Twigg and Houlihan are joined by Foxey Hardman (Sonia) and David Tudor (Dr. Astroff), while Mike Aherne and Jeremy Drakes share the role of Professor Alexandr. Aherne plays it in Wimbledon, with Drakes taking the role at the Old Red Lion Theatre.
Nadia Papachronopoulou directs Uncle Vanya. Papachronopoulou, who trained at the Orange Tree Theatre, recently directed Boots at The Bunker and After The Ball at Upstairs at the Gatehouse. Her creative team also includes Amy Lawrence (Movement Director), Valentina Turtur (Set Designer), Sam M Owen (Lighting Designer), Rose Montgomery (Costume Designer) and Joseph Bell (Composer).
This production is the 14th tour by Theatrical Niche and is also the largest they have ever staged. It follows the success of productions including A Doll’s House, Lady Windermere’s Fan, Metamorphosis and Lysistrata.
Uncle Vanya runs at the New Wimbledon Studio, 93 The Broadway, Wimbledon, London SW19 1QG from 19-23 November with performances Tuesday to Saturday 7.45pm, matinee Saturday 2.45pm.
