The self-proclaimed ‘show that taste and time forgot’, Up the Bunty! returns to the Lion & Unicorn Theatre next month, bringing an evening of silliness and cheer just before Christmas. Book your tickets now!
The comedy, produced by Fantastic Garlands, runs at the Kentish Town venue from 12 to 15 December 2019.
“This isn’t a revival, it’s a bloody farce!”
Remember the ‘Soparetta’s’, the weekly musical soap opera that dominated British TV in the late 1970s with their saucy jokes and catchy tunes? Neither does anyone else, but that won’t stop tyrannical producer Harry Hepworth from blundering ahead with a hastily put together theatre reunion in sunny Southend, funded by an anonymous backer.
With a cast made up of past their prime, egocentric thespians and a one hit wonder, Harry needs a secret weapon to attract an audience – Bunty the Beaver. A firm favourite from series one, Bunty was retired when her human operative Judith passed away, but with permission from Judith’s estate she is back to wow audiences and bring back the show’s early catchphrase – ‘Up the Bunty’.
With a bickering cast, dwindling budget and psychopath stalking the production, will the show ever go on?
A camp romp, Up the Bunty! is the lovechild of the Carry On films and Benny Hill with a healthy dose of wigs and dodgy accents and some (un)original music.
Up the Bunty! originally ran at the Lion and Unicorn back in the summer, when it was part of the theatre’s Camden Fringe line-up.
The production is created by the Fantastic Garlands team of writer Olivia Thompson and director Suzy Catliff, who originally met on a third year production at Mountview Theatre School. Since then Thompson has worked as an actor on stage and screen, and had her plays performed at venues including the New Diorama and Southwark Playhouse, while Thompson has directed across the UK, worked as a casting director for shows including Casualty and Silent Witness, and co-written The Casting Handbook.
The winter season at London’s Lion and Unicorn Theatre is packed with eclectic treats, with Anthony Neilson‘s dark comedy Penetrator, the return of acclaimed drama At Last and Up the Bunty! before Christmas, and Mad Wolf’s one-act Julius Caesar kicking off the new year.
Up The Bunty! runs at The Lion & Unicorn Theatre, 42-44 Gaisford St, Kentish Town, London NW5 2ED from 12-15 December with performances from Thursday to Saturday at 7.30pm, matinees Saturday 3pm, Sunday 5pm. Tickets are priced £10. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE!!
About Up The Bunty! creators Fantastic Garlands
Fantastic Garlands is a theatre company which was formed in 2018 by longtime collaborators Suzy Catliff and Olivia Thompson with the purpose of creating new theatre with women at the centre of it all. They aim to create entertaining, high quality shows with more than a hint of comedy which have something to say about the human condition – from a female point of view – and join the movement to redress the balance of centuries of male dominated drama and performance. Up the Bunty! was their first production, and was followed, in October 2019, by Mother Must Die?!, which ran at The Pleasance as part of the London Horror Festival.
